Xris and Rich Rahn, owners of Wheaton’s It’s Our Earth, have been on the leading edge of reinventing, repurposing and recycling for their business since 2003. All of their merchandise is earth-friendly and eco-minded. Their expanded space into an additional downtown Wheaton building brings even more opportunities to offer ideas about “going green.”

“We’ll be holding workshops,” says Rich, “and teach people how to be creative with things around the house.” One of the workshops will feature folding lessons–and making juice pouch purses. The additional retail space will also house the eBay staff–and customers will be able to bring in merchandise to be sold via the internet.

More upcycled home decor will be added to the merchandise assortment too. Lamps, tables, chairs and repurposed, rebuilt picture frames are included.

Reinvented merchandise continues to be a staple at It’s Our Earth. “Market bags and totes are hot right now,” says Xris. Totes are made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. Another new-old item is the recycled sari. It’s made in two layers, looks like a skirt, is reversible, and can be worn as a halter dress. Bike spoke jewelry, spoon rings, record chip bowls and colorful elephant dung stationery also continue in popularity.

“Backyard composting is another area where we can all make a difference,” says Xris. Leaves, grass and table scraps represent 30% of the material going into landfills. The Earth Machine is an advanced home composter that can produce rich garden humus in six to eight weeks by controlling moisture, heat and ventilation.

Besides reinvented merchandise, It’s Our Earth also carries vintage jewelry, clothing and home accessories.

It’s Our Earth is at 127 N. Main St., Wheaton. (630) 668-3800
