Homeowners Can Earn Up to $1,500 Tax Credit on Qualified Remodeling Projects

Posted by on August 1, 2009

The stimulus plan introduced recently includes an incentive for homeowners to undertake energy efficient home remodeling projects. Phil DiMaso, owner of Durabuilt Home Improvements, Inc. of Lombard, says homeowners have been most interested in updating windows and siding. Both improvements offer substantial savings according to DiMaso, but there are restrictions to note.

Durabuilt“New efficiency standards for 2009 have been introduced in order to qualify for the tax credit,” says DiMaso. Replacement windows are required to meet a higher standard this year than last, he says. “It’s a good thing for homeowners, because it lowers the energy bill, emits fewer carbons into the atmosphere, and helps control climate change.”

Adding new siding to a home does not automatically qualify for the tax credit, according to DiMaso. It’s actually the insulation installed behind the siding that ensures the energy savings. Insulation must have at least an R5 rating to meet qualifying guidelines. Insulation has improved dramatically in the last several years, according to DiMaso. Most styles consist of some type of styrofoam sheets, and also include moisture-resistant construction, mold inhibitors, and materials that repel insects, termites, and carpenter ants.
