Lately I’ve had a few patients with extraordinarily difficult or complicated cases. They arrived in my office because they were uncertain where to turn to or they wanted an opinion from a medical doctor who was familiar with conventional treatments and alternatives that other physicians often don’t recommend. I am pleased to be viewed in that way and happy to perform that service.
That is not to say that I try to twist arms to do alternative medicine, whether homeopathy, acupuncture, osteopathy or any of the many complementary disciplines. But I have a unique perspective in that I went to medical school and learned all the traditional methods of dealing with the myriad problems that can afflict a person and know what to expect from traveling that path. I also have 28 years experience using homeopathic medicines, nutrition and recommending some of the many other forms of therapy that are often without any of the consequences of traditional treatments.
When should you get a second opinion?
• Your physician is not a specialist in the area you need help with or does not have experience with your problems.
• Your problems are serious and you want confirmation that you are making the right decisions
• You would like information on treatments or alternatives that your doctor is not familiar with.
• You have a communication problem with your physician.
• You are unsure of the course of treatment your doctor recommends and would like more choices.
• If you have more than one physician, you would like someone to look at the whole picture and be able to explain things to you in a way you can understand.
I practice what I call integrative medicine which means the treatments I use are not exclusive of other treatments. Not all patients need the same thing even for the same diagnosis. I sometimes recommend Classical Homeopathy first, other times Osteopathic Manipulation or Acupuncture and sometimes, surgery is the best first step. Classical Homeopathy and Acupuncture are very strong forms of medicine that can treat very serious problems with none of the consequences of traditional medicine.
Remember that tests that have already been done do not need to be repeated. Most insurance companies will cover a second opinion and some even require it before treatment begins for some cases.
If you are interested in a second opinion from a physician who understands both traditional and nontraditional medicine please call the office for an appointment.

This fall, students going back to school face bigger challenges than ever before. Every year, teen culture raises the expectations for sexual behavior. Last year, it was sexting, the practice of teens sending each other nude pictures via text messages. What will it be this year?
As parents scramble to answer the challenges of raising teens, local non-profit Amplify Youth Development is partnering with them to help teens make good choices. Working in schools and community groups throughout DuPage, Amplify provides health and character education to teens, as well as workshops for parents.
Amplify’s programs center on teaching decision making, healthy relationships, and abstinence education to teens. “We want to see teens lead healthy, successful lives,” says Andrea Nelson, program director for Amplify. “That means physically and mentally healthy.”
According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, it is parents who have the biggest influence over teens’ decisions.
“Parents often under-estimate their influence,” says Nelson. “We try to help parents recognize the role they play in shaping their child’s choices.”
According to Nelson, one of the most important ways parents can influence their teens is by having open conversations on an ongoing basis. “Teens receive a constant stream of sexual messages from music, television, and the internet. It takes more than one conversation to counteract that.”
Parents attending workshops held last month in Naperville were taught the four A’s of parenting: affection, affirmation, advice and accountability. In short, high standards give teens something to aim for, and love helps them believe they can achieve it.

When Dr. Helen Dane started up her own veterinary practice in 1989, she could hardly have envisioned leading a team of eight doctors and twenty three support staff into a new $2.7 million free-standing building twenty years later. But that’s exactly what she did.
The new Danada Veterinary Hospital on Wheaton’s West Loop Drive opened September 8. The hospital features treatment rooms for each doctor, and state-of-the-art equipment to improve diagnoses and care for each pet. A new digital X-ray machine gives precise bone detail, while enhanced ultrasound equipment gives a better view of soft tissues. There is also a separate treatment room for dental procedures, one designated for exotic pets, and an isolation unit for pets with communicable conditions.
“Preventative medicine has been the cornerstone of our business,” says Dr. Dane. “We’ve been successful because we focus on communicating how to provide what’s best for pets.” Pets are living much longer today than thirty years ago, according to Dr. Dane. It’s not unusual to see dogs live to seventeen or eighteen years. The oldest cat patient is twenty three years old. Dr. Dane attributes longevity to better diagnostics, improved diet, and better preventive measures.
“Just like humans,” says Dr. Dane, “many animals need nutritional supplements.” Also, like humans, much more attention is given to pain relief for pets. There are arthritis medicines to keep older pets comfortable.
The new hospital also has pet boarding quarters–with separate areas for cats, dogs, and exotics. New “doggie turf” is set to be installed soon in the outdoor exercise area. “It’s great, as we can hose it down, it stays green all year, and is more comfortable for pets than gravel,” says Dr. Dane.
Danada Veterinary Hospital is at 10 West Loop Road, Wheaton. (630) 665-6161, www.danadavet.com.

Diane Beaulieu, a working mom with toddler twins and a four year old, says her family survived and thrived with the delicious meals prepared by Carol Stream’s Entrée Kitchen. “It was the next best thing to having my own personal chef,” she says.
Plum-Glazed Pork Ribs, Chicken Provencal, Honey Barbequed Steak, and Tilapia in Spanish Red Sauce are just a few of the creative October menu items. There are also delicious side dishes, like Asparagus, Smoked Provolone & Bacon, Sweet Potato Souffle, and Sweet Corn Bake. Desserts include Caramel Walnut Apple Pie, Nanaimo Bars, and a variety of cookies.
“Busy people struggle to find the time to plan, shop and prepare meals every day. I depended on Entrée Kitchen to make nutritious meals and keep dinnertime running smoothly.” So, when the business recently became available for purchase, Beaulieu (pronounced bowl-you) and her husband bought it.
Entrée Kitchen offers three ways to obtain these delicious meals, prepped and assembled in their custom-designed kitchen and cooked in yours. Choose between self-assembly, pick-up, or delivery service to your home or workplace. All meals are prepared with fresh ingredients and are designed and packaged for freezing to serve any time. Each meal serves six–but can be split for singles or empty-nesters.
“We use top quality meats and produce,” says Beaulieu. Ingredients are purchased through restaurant suppliers. “All of the recipes are developed in our kitchen, and thoroughly tested, including freezing and thawing, to simulate the at-home experience,” Beaulieu explains.
Free Memberships are available, giving substantial discounts for committing to purchase 9 or 12 orders throughout the year.
Entrée package sizes range from 6, 8, or 12 entrees and, when purchased under a membership program, can cost as little as $2.77 per serving. Entrée Kitchen also features meal Assembly Sessions–geared toward Girls’ Night Out events or Corporate Outings. As with every successful party, the best gathering is in the kitchen. In the sessions, guests enjoy an evening out, prepare meals together, and take home an entree package.
To learn more, contact owner Diane Beaulieu or manager Laurie Nolan. Entrée Kitchen is in Winfield Crossing Center on Geneva Rd., just west of Pleasant Hill Rd. in Carol Stream. (630) 668-4450. www.entreekitchen.com
