Welcome to our big summer fun issue! There are hundreds of ideas for family activities in the following pages. Whether you’re enjoying concerts at Cantigny, taking a ride on an old-time train at the Illinois Railway Museum, or playing paintball, make the most of summer–it goes by so fast!
Happy Father’s Day to all the hard-working dads… see gifts for your guy in our Dad’s Day gift guide on pages 28 and 29. Great buys are plentiful at local shops.
It’s time to move forward with Summer Home Improvement projects. One of the best investments to make with your cash, kitchen and bath upgrades can be done at bargain rates by many contractors. Adding insulation or a whole house fan will bring energy savings right away. See pages 13-20.
Get serious about the health of your mouth and gums. If you have gum or periodontal issues, adding antioxidant supplements can make a dramatic improvement. (I’ve got first-hand experience with gum problems, and endorse the radical change antioxidants can make in restoring gum health.) See Dr. Martens’ article on page 31.
Our contest winners this month are enjoying visits to Naper Settlement, Chicago’s Museum of Science & Industry, Allstate Arena to see Andre Rieu, Domo 77, Historic Volo Antique Auto Museum and more. We’ll have another random drawing for complimentary tickets next month. Call (630) 682-5958 by July 10 and leave your name, phone number and home town. June is a big month for the Nelsons. I’m traveling to Charlotte to celebrate the 1-year birthday of First Granddaughter Lila Ruth. My twins Jack & Jennifer also share that birthday. Daughter Jennifer graduates from DePaul University with her Masters in Flute Performance this month too. Go Flutes!
Our next issue will be August–featuring Top Students.

Spring flowers and green grass have burst upon us finally! It’s time to enjoy the season with creative outdoor projects. A beautiful garden with stunning clusters of color gives your home enhanced curb appeal, so plant now for dramatic impact throughout the summer. Choose plants at the Petals for Pets Sale May 8 and 9, benefitting the West Suburban Humane Society. For details, see page 5. Barn Owl Garden Center in Carol Stream has green houses loaded with annuals and perennials, plus colorful hanging baskets just in time for Mother’s Day.
Spiff up your gardens with new edging, by E’s Kurb Appeal. It gives a finished look, plus helps keep mulch in place. See page 5 for more information.
Summer Cruise Nights fire up in Naperville at Braconi’s on Wednesday, May 19, from 5-9pm. Every week different car types will be spotlighted.
May kicks off hundreds of Summer Fun for Families events. Use the discount coupons on page 29 for Lisle Park District activities; and head to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union to see the trains Hollywood made famous. For a discount coupon, see page 31.
Remember Mom on May 9 with a thoughtful gift from one of our local merchants. She’ll love “Pretty Tools” from Schmid’s, exquisite artwork from The Genuine Article, a silver spoon ring from It’s Our Earth, or a spa session at Clarice’s, Studio 209, or Heartland Spa. See pages 20-24 for more.
Our monthly prize drawing is back for May. We’ve got some passes to the Museum of Science & Industry, gift certificates for Domo 77 restaurant, plus other summer fun attractions. Believe it or not, Spring is just a couple short weeks away! Time to get the lawn mower tuned up at Carlson’s True Value, now that temperatures are inching past thirty degrees. There are plenty of things to address once the snow is gone for good–contact Lawn Doctor to set up a fertilizing program, get your deck restored by Dave’s Premier Decks, and be ready for summer with Jet Fan.
While waiting for the big thaw, make progress on renovating your home to keep it updated. Our local contractors have great suggestions for giving you the best return on money invested in your home. Kitchens and baths take the prize for best investments. Basements are making a strong showing too.
Sign up now for camps and classes. Spring break and Summer activities are educational, inspirational and fun. Kids will have fun at the Spring Fling Wing Ding at It’s Our Earth, where they’ll learn about repurposing.
We’re pleased to introduce some new Health & Fitness concepts this month, with an expanded section and new advertisers. Drs. Francis and Anderson in Wheaton offer high-tech same day tooth restoration. No temporaries needed. Dr. Rasper can diagnose the source of your pain, and correct your misalignment. If your elderly folks need assistance to remain in their home, BrightStar Health Care can help. And, to clean out your personal plumbing, call Shellie Carter for a colonic at Alder Healing Center.
Contest Winners for February include: Jenny Chang, Winfiled; Ellen Hampson and Ann Miller, Glen Ellyn; Marilyn Himmel, Carol Stream; Heri Peterlin, Naperville. They’ll be enjoying performances at the MAC Performing Arts Center at College of DuPage and Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace.
We’re taking the month of March off for our contest, as we’ll be moving our office. We’ll resume it once we get settled.

Sincere wishes for a Happy holiday season from Nelson’s Today! Let’s reflect on the many good things we enjoyed this year and take comfort that even better moments are coming soon.
Remember to support your hometown merchants–the ones who bring you holiday parades, participate in local events, pay taxes to maintain central business districts, offer you unique products and promote personalized service.
Extend a greeting to the ambitious entrepreneurs who are launching new businesses in this uncertain economy. The new Kids Town Play and Party in Wheaton will tickle your tots with educational entertainment. (More on pg. 33). Cold Noses in Glen Ellyn, with three staff “Pet Stylists,” will pamper your pooches and keep them healthy with a variety of dog food in stock. (See pg. 36). Teas & Toes in Glen Ellyn combines the relaxed ambience and exotic teahouse brews with the relaxation of a foot sanctuary. (Details are on Pg. 11). To take your party on the road–or to the party–call Spare Wheels in St. Charles, transportation for any number. (See Pg. 35 for a big discount). Stop by the new Papa Johns Pizza restaurant in Wheaton, tucked into a new location on South President St. (See pg. 42 for three great coupons).
Congratulations to the readers who were picked in this month’s drawing. They include Julie Blackwell, Schaumburg; Claude Shultes, Lisle; Robin Ryder, Jack Feeney and Susan McGuan, Wheaton.
Sports Fans, listen up! Our holiday contest prizes include tickets to see the Harlem Globetrotters, December 28 or 29 at the Allstate Arena. If you’d like to win tickets in our random drawing, call us by December 5 at (630) 682-5958 to enter. Leave your name, home town and phone number.
